 Our
History
In 1901, gas was used for lighting and Wellsbach gas burners with their gas
mantle had been invented. Everyone canned tomatoes in 'tin cans' sealed
with rosin. The cans were made up in the tin shop by the hundreds to be
ready for the canning season in the fall. About 75% of the people in
Sandusky heated their homes in the winter with hard coal stoves and a few used
either oak or hot-blast stoves. Every home needed stove pipe replaced in
the fall and as many as 1500 joints of stove pipe were fabricated in readiness
for the winter's cold weather. In 1920, as the business grew, a one-story
sheet metal shop completely equipped with power sheet metal working machinery
was erected. In 1931, Charles's sons: Carl M., Edwin W., and Harold
purchased the business and Charlie retired.
During the early years, a
re-tinning division of the Company was in operation for the purpose of
re-tinning 5 and 10 gallon milk cans for the dairies in Sandusky and
surrounding areas. Also for a period of years, the Company was
active in doing built-up roofing During the 1950's & 60's,
the Company engaged primarily in commercial, civic, industrial ventilating
work, air conditioning systems, dust and fume collecting systems,
industrial stacks, machine guards, etc. In the domestic field, the
installation and repairs to furnaces, gutters and downspouts, and slate
roof work, comprised prominent activity.
